Hyperemesis Gravidarum

Hyperemesis gravidarum is a severe and intractable form of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. Nausea and vomiting are common in pregnancy, occurring in 70-85% of all gravid women.

Usually women suffer from nausea during the first trimester of their pregnancy (between the fourth and sixth weeks). However, some women suffer from persistent and extreme nausea throughout their pregnancy. This rare condition is known as Hyperemesis gravidarum.

There are some causes which will increase the risk of suffering Hyperemesis gravidarum.
  1. Increased estrogen levels.
  2. High levels of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin).
  3. Helicobacter pylori.
  4. Vitamin B deficiency.
  5. Thyroid imbalances.
  6. Psychological factors.
  7. Gastrointestinal changes.
  8. High-fat diet. 
Prevent Hyperemesis gravidarum
  1. Vitamin B6 and ginger also help in suppressing the feeling of nausea.
  2. Eating bland food.
  3. Eating small meals frequently.
  4. Using pressure point wristbands.
  5. Waiting until nausea has subsided before taking iron supplements.


Nursing Diagnosis - Nursing Care Plan for Hyperemesis Gravidarum 

1. Imbalanced Nutrition Less Than Body Requirements related to the frequency of nausea and excessive vomiting.

2. Fluid volume deficit related to excessive fluid loss.

3. Ineffective coping related to physiological changes of pregnancy.

4. Activity intolerance related to weakness.
